Clark - Ongoing Medical Care

Meet Clark, a lovable 10-month-old Doberman who joined us from a local shelter. At his initial veterinary exam, a heart murmur was detected. Further evaluation revealed that he has dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a heart condition involving enlargement of his heart’s chambers and thinning of the chamber walls.

These structural changes in Clark’s heart makes it more difficult for his heart to pump blood effectively - however, his condition is not advanced, and his heart is not yet failing. Right now, the main concern for Clark is the development of arrhythmias. Because his heart wall is stretched thin, the electrical signals that are required for normal heart function can sometimes suddenly become abnormal and very fast, which keeps the heart from beating properly. This sudden, abnormal electrical activity can lead to sudden cardiac death.

Because of these risks, Clark must be closely monitored, and his condition must be managed appropriately. He will also require Holter echocardiograms every six months to monitor cardiac structure, function, and the development of any arrhythmias. Clark is currently being treated with Pimobendan, a medication that helps his heart pump more effectively. Between his medication, supplements, specialized heart-healthy diet, and ongoing veterinary care, his medical expenses have added up - his medication alone costs $130 per month, and his bi-yearly echocardiograms cost nearly $600 each.

Even with his condition, Clark hasn’t lost his joyful spirit. He loves long walks and playing with his foster siblings. Clark is available for adoption and would thrive in many different homes. Until he finds his forever family, we remain dedicated to providing him with the medical care, love, and support he deserves.

Clark’s story is not uncommon in Dobermans - the breed is predisposed to the development of DCM. Fortunately, thorough vetting and the ability to pay for cardiology care allowed DDR to fully assess his condition. If you’d like to be part of Clark’s story, you can sponsor his ongoing care or donate toward his cardiology visits, medications, and heart-healthy diet. Every gift helps us give him the very best days possible. If you’re able to donate Pimobendan, the medication he relies on, that support is incredibly meaningful as well.

Please include “Clark” in the comments so we know your gift is designated for him. ❤️
