Are You Ready to Adopt?
Bringing a Doberman into your home is a lifelong commitment. These dogs are intelligent, loyal, sensitive, and thrive when given structure, leadership, and love. Adoption is not just about wanting a dog — it’s about being ready to provide stability, training, time, and dedication for the rest of that dog’s life.
At Dogwood Doberman Rescue, we believe in intentional placement. Our goal is forever homes — not short-term solutions. Because of that, we are very thorough in our adoption process. Every decision we make is centered around what is best for the dog and what will give the highest chance of a successful, lifelong match.
What Does a Doberman Cost?
Adopting a Doberman is an investment in a lifetime of love and care. Beyond the adoption donation, there are ongoing expenses that come with caring for this breed:
Monthly expenses: quality food, enrichment, toys, supplies, and training
Veterinary care: routine check-ups, vaccines, heartworm/flea/tick prevention, and unexpected medical needs
Breed-specific health considerations: Dobermans are prone to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a serious heart condition that becomes more common as they age. For dogs over two years old, yearly echocardiograms and Holter monitor testing are strongly advised and encouraged to detect issues early
Owning a Doberman means being financially and emotionally prepared for both routine and unexpected expenses. They are not just pets — they are family members who depend on you for their lifetime.
Adoption Requirements
To ensure safe and lasting placements, we have the following requirements:
Must be 18 years or older
Must own your home OR provide landlord approval specifically allowing the Doberman breed
Fencing is not required; however, lack of a fenced yard may limit which dogs are candidates for your home, as not all dogs are appropriate for homes without fencing.
Children in the home:
Homes with children under 12 years of age may only adopt dogs under 6 months of age
Exceptions are made ONLY when we have verified, proven history that a dog is safe and experienced with young children
We do not make exceptions without absolutely confirmed knowledge
As a general rule, we do not do same-sex placements
This is for the safety and long-term success of our dogs
If you have both male and female dogs, we will discuss what placement may be most appropriate based on age and temperament
We do not place dogs who are too close in age to existing dogs in the home; a 2–3 year age gap is preferred to promote long-term balance and stability.
All resident dogs must be:
Spayed/neutered (or have documented medical reason from your veterinarian)
Up to date on vaccinations
Receive monthly HW prevention
Adopters must be willing to travel to the foster for a meet and greet and for adoption.
Adoption Donation
Our minimum adoption donation is $500. This donation goes directly toward offsetting the cost of veterinary care, spay/neuter, vaccinations, heartworm testing and treatment, as well as food and daily care while the dog is with us. To be fully transparent, intake on a healthy dog that only needs basic vetting is at least $300. However, the majority of dogs we take in require significantly more. Many arrive malnourished, heartworm positive, or in need of additional medical care that must be addressed before they are ready for adoption. It is not uncommon for dogs to cost $600 or more in vetting alone. We are never “making money” on an adoption. Every dollar of your adoption donation goes directly back into the rescue so we can continue saving Dobermans in need.
Application Donation Fee
There is a $25 application donation fee. As a 100% volunteer-run organization, our team dedicates significant time and effort to thoughtfully and thoroughly reviewing each application. This fee helps ensure that only serious applicants apply, supports the operational costs of running the rescue, and allows us to continue the lifesaving work we do. We deeply value our volunteers’ time and strive to keep our process intentional and respectful from the very beginning.
Application Turnaround Time
Our Applications Team is typically very quick about processing submissions. However, please allow a minimum of one week for processing, and up to two weeks during especially busy times. Clear and prompt communication helps expedite the process. Timely responses to interview scheduling, reference confirmations, and any requested information allow us to move efficiently and keep your application moving forward. If you have questions about your application status at any time, you are always welcome to reach out to our Applications Team at applications@dogwooddobermanrescue.org.
Our Adoption Process
Our process is thorough because it works. It protects our dogs and sets adopters up for long-term success.
Step 1: Submit an Application
Complete the adoption application and submit the $25 application donation fee.
Step 2: Interview & Reference Checks
As part of our adoption process, we conduct a personal interview, complete two personal reference checks, and perform a veterinary reference check. We also require a home video walkthrough to ensure the environment is a safe and appropriate fit for the dog. If you are renting, we will verify landlord approval as part of the application process.
Step 3: Approval
If approved, you are approved to adopt — meaning we believe you would provide an excellent home. While our application includes a space to indicate interest in a specific dog, approval is for a Doberman in general, not for one particular dog.
Approval does not mean the dog you listed will ultimately be the right fit for your home, and it does not guarantee that we currently have a dog available for you. What it does mean is that we believe you would be wonderful Doberman parents. All approvals are contingent upon finding the right match for both the dog and the adopter.
There is sometimes a waiting period. If you are serious about adopting, we strongly encourage you to submit your application and become approved as early as possible. That way, when the right dog comes along, we are ready to move forward.
Step 4: Matching
Once approved, we begin discussing potential matches. We will review the dogs you are interested in, as well as the dogs we believe may best fit your home and lifestyle. If multiple approved adopters are interested in the same dog, we move in order of longest approved and continue through the list until the right fit is identified.
Step 5: Foster Connection
If we determine a dog may be a good match, we will connect you directly with the foster home for a detailed phone conversation about the dog’s personality, needs, routine, and any quirks. This allows you to gain a deeper understanding of the dog and ask specific questions. If both the foster and the adopter feel it is a strong potential match after that conversation, we will move forward to scheduling a meet and greet.
Step 6: Meet & Greet
Adopter is expected to make travel arrangements to meet foster at an appropriate location . After the meet and greet, a 48-hour waiting period is required before adoption. We do not allow same-day adoptions, no exceptions. This pause is intentional. It takes the pressure off both the foster and the adopter, allowing everyone time to reflect, ask follow-up questions, and make a thoughtful decision rather than an emotional one. Our priority is ensuring the match is truly right for the dog and the family for the long term.
Our Promise
Our process may feel detailed — but it is intentional. Every Doberman that comes through DDR deserves stability, safety, and a lifelong commitment. We are not just placing dogs — we are building families. If you are ready to commit, we would love to walk this journey with you.
